The afrofuturism series
In the 1978 text “The Necessity of Tomorrows”, science-fiction writer Samuel Delany wrote - “We need images of tomorrow, and our people need them more than most.” This quote is extremely relevant in addressing the current societal context that people of color occupy in the United States in the realm of art, media, and performance. Renegade Performance Group (RPG) launched the AFROFUTURISM Series in 2014 as an ongoing project investigating, exploring, and reimaging Black signifiers within African culture through various forms including dance, technology, architecture, geography, text and embodied practice. Projects are developed collaboratively between multiple artists working across various disciplines and fields.
